Why it exists
For decades the Çamlıca hills carried a scatter of separate radio and television masts, cluttering the skyline above Istanbul's Asian side. The tower was conceived to bring those transmissions into a single structure so the older masts could come down.
Architecture
The design tapers from a wide base into a slender spire, with the public levels held in the bulge near the top. Standing around 365 metres tall on a hill that already rises about 260 metres, it is visible from a remarkable share of the city — which is precisely why it also works so well in reverse as a viewpoint.
A landmark and a viewpoint
Since opening to the public the tower has become a fixture of Istanbul itineraries, particularly for visitors who want the whole city in one frame rather than a single historic district.
